CA4SH is partnering with the two global programmes “Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security” (ProSoil) and “Soil Matters – Innovations for Soil Health and Agroecology” implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to enhance knowledge sharing for scaling soil health on the ground through implementation, policy, finance, and scientific pathways. The programmes are funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the Gates Foundation.
This initiative builds on an existing, robust evidence base and communication platforms to support decision-making and foster an enabling environment that encourages farmers and land managers to scale sustainable soil management practices on the ground.

What are SOILutions?
SOILutions builds on over a decade of knowledge sharing and on-the-ground implementation for soil protection and rehabilitation.
Through the Global Programme Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security (ProSoil), implemented by GIZ on behalf of the BMZ, more than 400,000 smallholder farmers have adopted climate-smart and agroecological practices to protect, restore, and maintain soil health. Since 2014, these efforts have helped protect and rehabilitate over one million hectares of land, improving food security and resilience across multiple countries in Africa and India.
Building on these achievements, the global programme Soil Matters launched in 2024 takes the next step by fostering the enabling environment needed for scaling soil health solutions. The programme focuses on strengthening policy frameworks, financial instruments, and research linkages that empower smallholders and institutions to invest in and sustain healthy soils.
The Partners for Change – SOILutions for a Food Secure, Resilient, and Sustainable Future Conference, held in Berlin from 20 to 22 May 2025, brought together more than 150 global actors to mobilize knowledge, policy, finance, and partnerships for soil health action. The conference advanced coordinated global efforts for protecting and restoring soils at scale and alignes with the goals of the Coalition of Action for Soil Health (CA4SH).

Soil Matters & ProSoil Programmes
Launched in 2025 under Germany’s Special Initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems,” the Global Programme Soil Matters – Innovations for Soil Health and Agroecology, implemented by GIZ and commissioned by BMZ with co-funding from the EU and the Gates Foundation, empowers local communities to adopt sustainable practices that benefit both people and planet. Active in Tunisia, India, Kenya, Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Cameroon, Soil Matters builds on the success of the ProSoil programme, which since 2014 has restored over 981,000 hectares of land, boosted productivity by 44%, improved the livelihoods of 2.6 million people (65% women), and reduced emissions by 1.74 million tonnes of CO₂ through climate-smart soil management.

CIFOR-ICRAF
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) envision a more equitable world where trees in all landscapes, from drylands to the humid tropics, enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR-ICRAF is a global centre of excellence for soil health and land restoration, integrated soil information, and soil organic carbon accounting, with relevance for food and nutrition security, national restoration goals and climate commitments. Providing rigorous actionable evidence, partnerships and global engagement are core to our work.

CA4SH
The main objective of the Coalition for Action on Soil Health (CA4SH) is to improve soil health globally by addressing critical implementation, monitoring, policy, and investment barriers that constrain farmers from adopting and scaling healthy soil practices. CA4SH is a motivated, multi-stakeholder approach to strengthen, facilitate and accelerate the adoption and scaling of soil health restoration practices. The 270-member Coalition consists of NGOs, farmer organizations and cooperatives (more than 45% of the membership), working alongside the private sector, governments, national research institutions, and more. CA4SH Is hosted by CIFOR-ICRAF, and is a key supporting partner for aligning stakeholders to support this initiative.
