2024 CA4SH WEBINAR SERIES SESSION 3 - The road ahead for soil health action: Harnessing science & knowledge to scale monitoring and actionable data

Scaling soil health requires on-the-ground intervention into its physical, chemical and biological components. There are endless technologies available with which to do this, ranging from high-intensity to low-impact, and everywhere in between. Further, indigenous peoples have always been stewards of soil health and invaluable sources of knowledge of their local contexts. CA4SH comprises indigenous organisations, as well as several private sector soil technology organisations, research institutions and other stakeholders who are continually working towards enhancing soil health through a variety of interventions catered to different contexts and scales.

The second session of the CA4SH 2024 Webinar Series is dedicated to science and knowledge for scaling soil health and the stakeholders behind it.

2024 CA4SH WEBINAR SERIES SESSION 2 - The road ahead for soil health action: Investing in soil health from the ground up

Increasing soil health may seem as easy as changing land use practices towards regenerative systems, but it is rarely so straightforward for farmers on the ground - especially smallholders. Transitioning to new systems usually sees farmers’ yields decrease before they increase, and support is needed to help them bridge the gap. There are various ways in which organisations can invest in soil health by supporting farmers on the ground and making a case for investing in soil carbon stocks through regenerative practices.

To help raise awareness of the various mechanisms of financing soil health, CA4SH is organising the third session of the 2024 Webinar Series around the topic of financing soil health.

2024 CA4SH WEBINAR SERIES SESSION 1 - The road ahead for soil health action: Creating an enabling policy environment for soil health post-COP28
Mar

2024 CA4SH WEBINAR SERIES SESSION 1 - The road ahead for soil health action: Creating an enabling policy environment for soil health post-COP28

Soil has recently made its way into high-level policy mechanisms, such as the Australian National Soil Strategy and the European Union Soil Strategy for 2030, and is gaining ground through the United Kingdom Soil Health Inquiry. In multinational dialogue, soil health was also included in the decisions following the UNFCCC COP27 in 2022, through the Koronivia joint work on agriculture, and in the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action at COP28. However, translating these decisions into enabling policy mechanisms is not a linear path.

To gain momentum on these important movements, and scale into other contexts, CA4SH is organising the first session of the 2024 Webinar Series around the topic of road mapping soil health into policy.

UNEA-6 Luncheon - Bringing Nature and Food into UNEA and National Policy

The WWF, the Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH), CIFOR-ICRAF, the Alliance of Bioversity/CIAT (CGIAR), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are co-hosting the Roundtable Luncheon to explore the question of how global agreements can be translated to national level implementation and what role UNEA Resolutions can play in this context. For example linking Land Degradation Neutrality targets, Ecosystem Restoration targets, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Global Biodiversity Framework (Target 2 and 10) and Agricultural Strategies to scale implementation on the ground. Food systems transformation and land restoration are key to harmonising action between the Rio conventions to achieve climate, biodiversity and land targets. In view of this year's UNCCD COP 16 in Saudi Arabia, UNCBD COP 16 in Colombia, we want to place a special focus on addressing soil degradation and strengthening soil health.

Cultivating Opportunities on African Soil

The agricultural economy of Africa has grown faster than that of any other continent in the last two decades. But rising debt and geopolitical tensions, combined with threats of water scarcity, food insecurity, and climate chaos are significant risks to be navigated wisely.

Unleashing Africa's potential lies in harnessing innovations, using soil and water resources more efficiently, restoring natural capital and ecosystems and empowering a skilled workforce. How can we navigate existing risks to cultivate opportunities in the agri-food sector, paving the way for prosperity, security and resilience for the continent?

Soil Inorganic Carbon: The often unaccounted yet irrecoverable carbon pool (STC -Webinar)

The International 4p1000 Initiative presents the second instalment of its Soil Carbon Science Webinar Series.

Soil inorganic carbon contributes to up to half of the terrestrial carbon stock and holds significance in arid and semi-arid environments. Despite its significance in the global carbon pool and role in climate regulation, SIC has received less attention compared to soil organic carbon. Recent findings challenge the notion of SIC's negligible contribution to the global carbon cycle, revealing its susceptibility to climate change and agricultural practices. Additionally, SOC and SIC are interrelated and we need to account for both SOC and SIC to build a complete picture of the soil carbon cycle. Understanding the interaction of both carbon forms helps build resilient soils to global changes.
