Rangelands support billions of people, sustain pastoral economies, conserve biodiversity and provide critical ecosystem services. Yet they remain among the world’s least consistently monitored ecosystems. A recently published paper, Toward a global monitoring framework of soil and rangeland health: Building on 20 years of the LDSF, examines this gap and explores how two decades of the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) could help underpin a more harmonised global approach to monitoring soil and rangeland health.

The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be hosted by Mongolia in its capital city, Ulaanbaatar, from 17 to 28 August 2026 under the theme Restoring Land. Restoring Hope.

Yet soils remain significantly underrepresented within climate policy, investment strategies and corporate transition planning. This London Climate Action Week webinar will bring together leaders from science, business, finance and policy to explore how soil can be positioned as a strategic climate solution supporting national and global climate ambitions.

This webinar aims to engage pastoralist youth and young women in generating additional youth-led insights, experiences, and recommendations for the Global Youth Policy Brief. It will complement the findings of the global survey, “Young Women and Youth in Pastoralism and Rangelands: A Global Survey to Inform UNCCD COP17 and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists.”

Soil organic carbon plays a critical role in building climate-resilient food systems by improving soil fertility, strengthening water retention, supporting productivity, and contributing to climate mitigation. At the same time, soil degradation and unsustainable land management continue to undermine these benefits, while evidence on soil restoration and regenerative agriculture is not always reflected in policy, planning, or investment decisions.  This 60-minute webinar will explore how evidence on soil health and soil organic carbon can be translated into policy-relevant messages and practical action. Participants will gain insight into the links between soil health, climate resilience, and food security, as well as the policy and governance gaps that continue to limit progress.
