Beyond Soil Health: Learning from Living Rangelands

Those of us who spend our lives in rangelands rarely think simply in terms of soil. We think in terms of soils.

Every soil type reflects an ancient geological history. The soils beneath my feet were formed over thousands, sometimes millions, of years from volcanic ash, ancient basement gneisses, river deposits and the black cotton clays that characterise parts of northern Kenya. They are the inheritance of geology. Each possesses its own physical and chemical characteristics, its own capacity to hold water, cycle nutrients, and support life. Every soil has its own potential, and every soil interacts with particular plant communities. Healthy rangelands are therefore built not on one soil, but on the remarkable diversity of soils and the equally remarkable diversity of plants they support.

Op-Ed | Towards scaling soil health, rangeland restoration, and achieving global goals: Bringing evidence to bear

Despite progress over the past five years, soil degradation is continuing to happen at alarming rates, with over 2.3 billion people experience moderate or severe food insecurity, globally. With over 40% of the Earth’s surface degraded, including about 50% of the world’s rangelands, concerted action is needed.

Business as usual is no longer an option.

On this the 2026 Desertification and Drought Day, which coincides with the start of the CA4SH five-year celebrations and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP), the theme of this year’s Desertification and Drought Day, Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore., is more relevant than ever.

Soil Cover and Landscape Integrity

The devastating drought of 2021/22 in Kenya severely stressed the soil, underscoring the urgent need for restoration and conservation efforts. On one side of the boundary fence, within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, lies a protected area dedicated entirely to safeguarding wildlife. In stark contrast, the area on the left is used for livestock grazing, exemplifying how different land uses impact soil health. This stark juxtaposition serves as a potent reminder: understanding how landscapes function at the soil level is crucial for preserving landscape integrity and ensuring a thriving environment for future generations. Our actions today will determine the health of our land tomorrow.

Local Knowledge is Key for Grassland Conservation and Restoration

In Northern Kenya, WWF works with a community-run organisation called Nature and People as One (NaPO) through the Voices for Climate Action programme, which serves as a great example of harnessing the intergenerational knowledge and experience of pastoralist communities. Founded in 2018 by young people from Karare, Marsabit, NaPO works closely with pastoralists to address the challenges they are facing constructively, in order to protect, manage and restore rangelands and the valuable ecosystem services they provide.

CA4SH at the 2023 World Water Week: Innovative solutions for promoting healthy rangelands under a changing climate

Rangelands cover about half of the Earth’s land surface, store between 10 and 30% of terrestrial carbon, and support over 2 billion people, yet they are under-recognized and under-valued and have been largely ignored in sustainable development agendas and climate negotiations.

On 21 August 2023, CA4SH joined CIFOR-ICRAF, Focali, IGAD, SIWI, SLU, University of Nairobi, and WWF at the 2023 World Water Week organized by Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) in a virtual session to discuss water-smart rangeland restoration.
