Invasive Species as Drivers of Biodiversity Loss and Global Food Insecurity

When: 8 December, 14:00 – 15:30

Where: UNEP Rooftop Conference Zone, Conference Room #14

Organizers: UNEP Farmers Major Group, SfL, University of Florida Invasion Science Institute, CIFOR-ICRAF, GFN

This event addresses the increasing and accelerating negative impacts and threats from invasive species and biological pollution on the marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems around the world. These alarming challenges result in biodiversity loss, famine, pestilence, and pandemics in human, plant, animal and microbial populations. A diverse panel of scientists, policy makers, and farmers will give expert representations, followed by a discussion with the audience, on how they are responding to invasives by harnessing innovation and technology, collecting and analyzing data, and encouraging the collaboration of a wider audience of stakeholders from science, governments, NGO’s, universities, farmers, and conservationists. This event will sound the alarm across UN platforms to highlight the increasingly interwoven vulnerabilities of our food production and life systems, health, and environmental security to the growing threat of invasive species.

Keynote Message: Dr. S. Luke Flory, Professor and Director, University of Florida Invasion Science Institute

Expert Panel:

  • Moderator: A.G. Kawamura, Farmer, Co-Chair Solutions from the Land (SfL)

  • Leigh Ann Winowiecke, The Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF)

  • Paul M. Temple, Farmer and Global Farmer Network

To support the implementation of AMCEN Decision 20/1(a): Advancing sustainable soil health for nature and resilient food systems in Africa which in turn supports the implementation of UNCCD Decision 19/COP.16: Avoiding, reducing and reversing land and soil degradation of agricultural lands and reaching the restoration targets under the KMGBF (Target 2) and the UN Decade.

It will bring together diverse actors, including Member States, the private sector, youth, scientists, investors, farmer organizations, and civil society to share strategies, tools and innovations in monitoring, and inclusive investments to scale soil health and advance national goals on food, climate, biodiversity, and land.
