Topic: Advancements in Soil and Land Health Monitoring for Ecosystem Restoration, Biodiversity, Food and Nutrition Security, and Climate Action
Date: Tuesday, 24th September 2025
Time: 13:30 – 15:00 hrs (EAT)
We are pleased to invite you to this upcoming webinar to highlight advancements monitoring soil health, land degradation and vegetation diversity in sub-Saharan Africa.
Healthy soil is the foundation of our food systems and provides several vital ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, improved food and nutrition security, water cycle regulation, and hosting biodiversity. However, land degradation negatively impacts over 3.2 billion people, globally. To move from scarcity to prosperity, efforts to combat desertification must consider how to scale soil health. A robust evidence base is needed to stop further degradation and prioritize interventions.
The webinar will highlight field-based assessments, advanced data analytics, Earth Observation and citizen science to track changes in soil organic carbon and other indicators over time. These methods have been implemented and scaled with numerous partners across agricultural landscapes, rangelands, and forests in forty countries throughout the global tropics.
Speakers:
Dr. Elizabeth Kimani, African Population & Health Research Centre — Opening remarks and project presentation
Dr. Leigh Winowiecki, CIFOR-ICRAF — Presenter
Dr. Christine Magaju, CIFOR-ICRAF — Presenter
Join us for this important discussion as we explore pathways to scaling soil health interventions and building a stronger evidence base to combat land degradation.
